Our Impact

We have served over 1,500 underserved youth since 2019 and are currently serving over 300 youth at our two partner schools, Escuelita (OUSD) and Oakland Unity Middle School (OUMS). Our programs have consistently proven to effectively foster Social Emotional Learning capacities and positively impact school culture.

Our School Based Offerings

Mindful Sports Electives

Our Mindful Sports electives use sport and movement as portals for students to build communities of belonging and cultivate their Social Emotional Learning and mindfulness habits. Our highly qualified coaches work with cohorts of 15 students and integrate team building and mindfulness exercises into sport specific programming. We currently offer basketball and soccer specific programming and are always looking to expand our offerings based on the needs of school communities. Professional Development

Calling on over thirteen years of teacher coaching and professional development facilitation experience, we offer a range of professional development services to schools around such areas as Social Emotional Learning, Design for Belonging, Building Relationships, Science of Play, Facilitating Challenging Conversations, Implicit Bias and more. If you are interested to learn more, please contact us.

Learning through Play

Our Learning through Play classes are designed based on research which documents the profound benefits of child lead play. Our highly qualified coaches facilitate these classes to groups of 20-25 students and cultivate an environment of belonging, respect, and play which has proven to lead to powerful Social Emotional Learning growth and impacts on school culture. If you are interested to learn more, please contact us.

After School

While we appreciate the unique school culture benefits of school day programming, we understand that some schools do not have space in the school day for additional programming. We have multiple years of after school programming experience with strong results. We can offer all of our progrmming in after school settings. If you are interested to learn more, please contact us.

Recess Enrichment

Our Recess Enrichment programming promotes a safe, active and dynamic space of belonging at recess. Our highly trained coaches intentionally build relationships during recess in order to get to know each student. Coaches support recess by striking a balance of actively facilitating games and allowing space for students to lead their own play independently. Our recess programming has proven to positively impact not only recess but overall school culture. If you are interested to learn more, please contact us.

What we cultivaate

Our programming is designed and facilitated to cultivate Social Emotional Learning, mindfulness and wellness capacities. We have chosen these areas because they are shown to be essential elements of a fulfilling life. Read below to learn more about why we have chosen these areas of focus and how we nurture them through our programs.

Social Emotional Learning: We use relationships, sport and play as tools to foster Social Emotional Learning and belonging. Research, parents, teachers, and community leaders all agree that cultivating social and emotional skills leads to positive outcomes for youth in school and life. Our program, grounded in the CASEL framework of Social Emotional Learning, uses strong relationships with coaches and the joy and camaraderie of sport and play to nurture the social and emotional skills to enrich life and access greater opportunity.

Mindfulness: Mindfulness is proven to have wide ranging benefits including improved academic performance, increased levels of self esteem, reduced stress and deeper social emotional learning skills. Mindfulness, sport and play are naturally connected (for example: mindful breathing precedes each foul shot) and sport and play create the perfect portal for students who may otherwise not engage in mindfulness. We incorporate mindful breathing into all of our programming so youth can build their mindfulness tool kits for life!

Wellness: Our goal is not to create the next generation of professional athletes but to use relationships, sport and play to nurture the next generation of thriving and healthy human beings. Not only do we teach youth sports and games, we work to help youth gain a greater understanding of establishing life-long healthy playful habits that will support both body and mind. We believe equity and community wellness are essential elements of “wellness” and we emphasize connections between sport, play, community, belonging and social justice whenever possible in our programming.

THEORY OF CHANGE

We can affect social impact through creating short and long term positive changes in the lives of young people through providing equitable access to highly qualified coaches and an evidence based “mind body” curriculum to develop skills and habits proven to increase health, educational and professional outcomes.

RESULTS

  • Benjie Achtenberg, East Bay Regional Program Manager, Aim High.

"Aim High's partnership with Ball For Life has been wonderful for our students both in person and virtually. Their programming continues to be fun, engaging and thought provoking in meaningful ways for students. Students only have great things to say about Jake and Hector and love the content. It's awesome to see a super physical sports program transform into an equally engaging and impactful virtual program. We plan to continue our partnership this summer and hopefully beyond, so that more Aim High students can benefit from Ball For Life's programming."

  • Jess Baer, Director of Operations at Explore Charter School

“Ball for Life enabled our students to explore their love for sports online when the world of sports shut down. Jake is extremely professional, responsive, and thorough in his interactions. It’s been a pleasure to work with him.

  • Austin Razavi, Dean of Students, Unity Middle School (East Oakland)

  • Marley Duerst, Aim High Instructor

“Jake was such an amazing coach, even through zoom, he obviously inspired all the students, but he definitely inspired me as well!! I was so touched with his devotion to social justice, understanding sport as a vehicle for change, and passion for the students to be happy and healthy. We need more organizations like Ball for Life out there!!”
